There are very many benefits of sending a boy to a preparatory school. One of the most important is the preparation for the challenges and opportunities of their future lives.

Applying for a Place at Shrewsbury House School

Before applying for a place for their son, parents should be fully aware that it is the School’s policy to prepare boys who are aiming at entry to their Senior School in the academic year following their thirteenth birthday. Boys aiming for schools with an earlier starting age will not benefit from Shrewsbury House and should not, therefore, be entered for the School (it is expected that boys do not sit for 11+ exams if they attend Shrewsbury House School).

Boys usually join the School in the September after their seventh birthday. Occasionally places can be offered to boys of other ages. The School welcomes applicants from diverse religious, ethnic and financial backgrounds.

Conditional Places Assessment

If you would like your son to be considered for a place, you should complete and return the Registration Form. To gain a definite place, he will have to meet the admissions criteria of our Entry Assessment. The Assessment is held in the autumn of the year preceding a boy’s anticipated starting date. Prior to a boy taking the Assessment, parents are requested to pay a deposit of half of one term’s fees.

The Conditional Places Assessment is not competitive – there is a conditional place in the school for every boy who sits it. Provided that he demonstrates in the Assessment that he will be able to thrive at Shrewsbury House and access the curriculum, he will be offered a definite place. Parents should denote in the appropriate place on the Registration Form if they would like their son to be considered for a Conditional Place or an Occasional Place on the Headmaster’s List (see explanation below). The deposit will be requested in the early summer of the year in which the boy would be due to take the Assessment (excepting those boys who are joining us directly from Shrewsbury House Pre-Preparatory School). This will be returned less any outstanding expenses, at the end of the Summer Term after a boy’s thirteenth birthday, or at the end of the term after he has passed into his senior school, whichever is the later. It will, of course, be refunded if a place is not offered or if the parents do not take up the offer of a place by the published deadline, following assessment. Conditional Places are only offered to boys who will be seven years of age on starting at Shrewsbury House.

Conditional Place Entry 2018 - Timeline of Key Dates

Headmaster’s List

The Headmaster's List is set out specifically for parents who are looking for entry at a later stage (e.g. 8+) and for whom Shrewsbury House is the parents' preferred choice school and this position should be endorsed by the boy’s current school’s Head.

Those boys who are too late to register for a Conditional Place at 7+ or who apply for entry to the School after September entry in Year 3 will be placed on a wait list. They may be moved on to the Headmaster's List and will then be asked to sit a series of assessments as deemed appropriate for their age group. Successful entry to the School  through the Headmaster's List is at the sole discretion of the Headmaster and inclusion on the List does not, in any way, guarantee a place at the School.
