The English Department at Shrewsbury House strives to give our pupils an enthusiasm and love of the subject that will inspire them, in all areas of language and literature, for life.

English lessons at Shrewsbury House take the pupils on a journey through the exciting worlds of prose, poetry and drama.

Rigorous preparation for Common Entrance and Scholarships for entry to the country’s most prestigious schools is, we believe, both driven and enhanced by our philosophy of providing a broad, flexible and ambitious English curriculum supported by assessment that genuinely informs learning. The Department aims to extend the horizons and skills of pupils beyond the parameters laid down by the government and examining boards.

We aim to enable boys to speak with confidence and communicate clearly in a wide variety of circumstances and situations. All boys participate in the annual Poetry Recital Competition and the boys in Years 3, 5 and 7 will be entered for English Speaking Board examinations in the coming academic year giving them the opportunity to pass awards for choral/group poetry recitals and/or individual presentations. All boys participate in a year group play and are given the opportunity to read at the Harvest Festival and Carol Services.

English teaching extends beyond the classroom with outings including The Roald Dahl Museum for the younger boys and participating in workshops at The Globe Theatre for Year 6. The boys are also inspired by visits from authors and our annual Book Day event organised with the Library.
