Aims of the Classics Department: to instil the inherent interest and excitement of the ancient world and its powerful influence on modern languages, culture and thought.

At Shrewsbury House, Latin is far from a dead language, but a flourishing and vibrant subject which is popular with the pupils. As stated in our aims, the Classics Department encourages students to explore the culture which has influenced our society and investigate the many wonders of the classical world, both linguistically and historically.

Taking advantage of the range of cross-curricular opportunities it offers, Classics features in every year group of the school. Students’ study aspects of Roman and Egyptian society as part of their History course and go on to learn about the gods in Greek mythology as well as the main Greek Heroes: Perseus, Theseus, Jason and Hercules as part of their English course. Outside the classroom, we collaborate with other Departments for day and residential trips, both nationally and internationally; trips to the National Gallery and Fishbourne Palace allow us to explore the vestiges of Greece and Rome close at hand, while the trip to Italy gives pupils the opportunity to journey to the very centres of those civilisations, as well as examine the remarkable volcanic geography of Southern Italy. Moreover, we organise events such as guest speakers, Latin Day and Classics plays to promote Classics in its own right and expand the students’ appreciation of the subject beyond the syllabus.

The department prides itself on the excellent standards which the pupils reach in all areas of the subject, both inside and outside the classroom. Through traditional and more modern methods of learning, we feel that the boys value the subject beyond exams and leave Shrewsbury House not only with an appreciation of how language works, but also a hunger to learn more about where we come from.
