ISI Inspection Report May 2013

The aim of the Art Department at Shrewsbury House is to allow creative opportunities for every boy by developing their knowledge of practical techniques and processes, creative thinking skills and understanding of artists and genres. We encourage a safe and happy environment for the boys to explore their creativity and extend their boundaries.

During their time at Shrewsbury House, boys will receive a broad education in all aspects of Art and Design including separate Art and Design Technology lessons. The Department is dedicated to offering an engaging and dynamic programme of study in Art which covers painting, drawing, print making, graphic design, illustration and 3D sculptural work. Contextual references will always anchor any process or project and non-Western art projects are incorporated to develop knowledge and understanding of different cultures other than our own.

We feel it is important for the boys to experience art outside of the classroom and we aim to provide a rich array of trips and workshops. Recently we have visited the Tate Modern, Orleans House Gallery (Richmond) and the Wildlife Photography Exhibition at the Natural History Museum. We were also joined by children's author and illustrator Petr Horacek for a series of workshops at school. Working with Petr, the boys produced a fantastic mural that can be seen at the top of this page.

We take great pride in our School Gallery which adorns the school walls as it provides the opportunity to showcase the boys' work. We also curate an annual Art and Design Exhibition, which allows us to celebrate the students' successes with family, friends, Governors and staff.

Having enjoyed Art Scholarship success at Epsom College, Harrow School and St John’s College we are proud of the development programme for our art scholars who have the opportunity to engage in Extra Art classes to build upon their portfolios with the Head of Art and Design. We also offer extra drawing and painting classes to the whole school, which are led by a local artist Keith Robinson, who has had work exhibited in both the BP Portrait Award and the Thread Needle Prize.

Our Department offers a rich and broad creative education, giving the boys a solid foundation to build upon as they move through life, always striving to fulfil our Mission Statement,

‘To provide fun, fresh and creative opportunities for every boy regardless of ability.’
