“At Shrewsbury House School Sport we aim to inspire, educate and develop every boy to achieve excellence and enjoyment through sport and physical education.”
Our Core Values
- Hard Work
“Inspire every boy in the school. To be respected as a progressive and innovative department at the forefront of Prep School sport.”
Sport at Shrewsbury House is an integral and vital part of school life. We provide a programme based on inclusivity, enjoyment and performance. Although we are proud of our success in Regional and National competition, Shrewsbury House School is just as focused on providing as broad an opportunity as possible for all boys. This is extended to representing the school in competition and high targets are set to ensure that every boy experiences the enjoyment and pride of competing for his school in the three main sports.
Although much focus and energy is directed towards the delivery of the core sports of Football, Rugby and Cricket, the boys are offered the opportunity of a much broader programme. All boys participate in an extended programme of Swimming as well as following a comprehensive Physical Education (PE) curriculum. The PE programme includes lessons to enhance physical development, gymnastic ability, racquet skills and athletics technique. Other sports and activities on offer include Hockey, Biathlon, Shooting, Athletics, Tennis, Fives, Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Cross Country, Sailing, Skiing and Judo. In competition, teams from Shrewsbury House School are regularly successful. In recent times both the Cricket team has won County competitions and the Football and Rugby teams (of various year groups) have won National titles. The opportunity to compete in other sports is continually being extended and boys from Shrewsbury House have enjoyed success in Golf, Swimming, Athletics, Hockey, Tennis and Sailing.
The boys at Shrewsbury House School enjoy wonderful facilities based at the main school site on Ditton Road, and at our dedicated sports ground at Almshouse Lane. We have a covered swimming pool, three senior grass pitches, a state-of-the-art 4G IRB All Weather Surface, two further “astro” all weather surfaces, an indoor sports hall, a hard-standing play area, indoor and outdoor cricket nets and a new athletic jump area. With facilities like these it is easy to see how the boys never miss out! We also encourage and engender links with external community sports organisations and currently support RunMaker (Cricket), Concept4International (Football) and Cobham Academy (Cricket).
Major and Minor Scholarships, Awards and Exhibitions to Senior School have also been awarded in Sport by:
Cranleigh School, Epsom College, Hampton School, King’s College School, Reed‘s School, St. John’s School, Tonbridge School and Wellington College.
The team of staff charged with developing the boys’ learning, understanding and enjoyment of all sport are dedicated and highly qualified. We have a large Department dedicated solely to the delivery of Sport and PE and among its members are staff with FA, UEFA, RFU, ASA and ECB coaching qualifications, as well as experience of playing sport at the highest level. This combination of experience, training and natural enthusiasm within the team ensures that the boys at Shrewsbury House School receive the very best support. The team is led by the Director of Sport, Billy Davison, who is charged with ensuring the breadth, variety, quality and opportunity in sport are maintained throughout the year. Billy has been at SHS since 2011 and is a former Harlequins, Saracens and England A rugby professional.
We believe in the value of hard work, in the individuality of each boy and in the inherent values that can be developed and underpinned by involvement in team sport. The success of our programme is not only seen in results but rather in enjoyment, sportsmanship, self-confidence and in the achievements of boys in other walks of school and personal life. The opportunity for boys to participate in our Sport and PE programme, to develop individual skills and to compete for the school in team sport, is open and encouraged to all.
Mr. W. Davison BA (Hons.)
