The overseas sports tour is a regular feature on the Shrewsbury House sporting calendar, providing the opportunity for our athletes to compete against overseas clubs and school teams while soaking up a bit of the local culture.
In recent years international sports tours have included a Rugby tour to South Africa, Cricket tour to St Lucia and Football in a number of European destinations. In addition a number of domestic tours and camps have been organised, this includes the Senior Rugby squad travelling to Ireland for a pre-season tour.
Holland & Ireland - Pre-Season Football & Rugby Tours
Over the past few years Shrewsbury House has enjoyed some excellent success on a National level in Football and Rugby. During the 2015-16 academic year, we were both National IAPS six-a-side Football champions and U13 National Rugby Champions. A key factor in this success is the pre-season work that we undertake on our pre-season tours. In recent times the Football squad have travelled to Holland and the Rugby squad to Ireland. These short tours provide the opportunity for players to stake a place in the top teams, with extensive training and matches on first class pitches.
St. Lucia Cricket Tour
How many 13 year old boys can say they have taken wickets, scored runs or chased a ball to the boundary at a Test Cricket venue? - That’s what a cricket tour to St Lucia with Shrewsbury House offers.
SHS boys have the opportunity to experience this, as well as, learn about the history of the country and enjoy the blue sea and white sand of St. Lucia. Participation in the tour is open to all boys from the 1st team to the 6th team, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience an overseas cricket tour.
South Africa Rugby Tour
Our major overseas Rugby tour runs every other year on a rotational basis with the cricket tour. Once again the tour is open to any boy (of appropriate age) who wishes to participate. In recent years Shrewsbury House rugby players have headed to South Africa during the Easter holidays giving the boys the opportunity to explore a fascinating country and play some competitive fixtures against schools in Cape Town.
One of the highlights of the tour has been the visit to Langa Township. Here the Shrewsbury House boys experience the local culture , play a friendly match against local boys and give out tee-shirts and rugby equipment to help support the local community.
Easter 2016 saw the latest cohort of Shrewsbury House boys travel to South Africa. Mr Leek, Head of Rugby, put together an itinerary which included seeing the penguins at Boulders Beach a wildlife reserve and watching the Sharks Vs Lions in the newly expanded Super Rugby tournament. All of this was mixed in with three matches for the boys, as well as, a number of training sessions. This year’s rugby trip to South Africa was one that will live in the memories of boys for years to come!
