Last week Year 6 ventured to Dorset for their annual Expedition week residential trip. On Monday morning we gathered in the Sports Hall prior to departure ready to load copious amounts of kit on to the School minibuses. We travelled down to Swanage arriving in time for lunch, after which the boys took part in a series of team building exercises before unpacking their kit in to their tents ready for the busy week ahead. After dinner the boys enjoyed taking part in games on the beach or going crabbing.
Tuesday morning arrived and the sunshine heralded a day of beautiful weather. The boys were split into two groups, with one set of boys heading off to the woods to learn survival/bush-craft skills, whilst the other set of boys went to the beach to take part in kayaking before learning how to build a raft. In the evening the boys played more games before heading back to their tents exhausted after a very busy day.
Unfortunately on Wednesday the weather turned against us, as rain and cloud shrouded the Dorset coast. However, this did not dampen the spirits of the SHS campers as the boys went climbing and orienteering around Swanage. In particular the climbing activity was hugely popular amongst the boys, not least because of the sense of achievement they had from climbing in some challenging conditions. In the evening we enjoyed some raucous camp fire singing and roasted marshmallows on the camp fire. Wednesday was also Boris’ birthday so we helped him celebrate in style with a cake!
On Thursday, we returned to the woods and the beach so that the boys had the opportunity to take part in the survival skills workshop or the kayaking and raft building exercises, depending upon their activity on Tuesday. By Friday the weather had thankfully improved and we all took a walk up to Old Harry’s Rock which the boys have been studying as part of their Year 6 Geography curriculum. We packed up our things and headed back to Shrewsbury House exhausted but having had a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable week together.
A couple of the boys commented on their highlights of the week – “building the kayak was really good fun.”
“My favourite part of Expedition week was learning bush-craft skills in the woods as these are things that I had never learnt about before.
