Last week Year 6 ventured to Dorset for their annual Expedition week residential trip with ‘Land and Wave’ in Dorset.
On Monday morning we gathered in the Sports Hall prior to departure ready to load copious amounts of kit on to the School minibuses. We travelled down to Swanage arriving in time for lunch and after dropping off our kit at the campsite we headed out for a coastal walk to Old Harry Rocks as we explored the Jurassic Coast. The weather was glorious and we returned to the campsite for dinner before the boys took part in the ‘mini-Olympics’ including creating their own opening ceremony…the results were highly entertaining.
The next day we travelled to the beach at Sandbanks where the boys divided into groups to take part in paddle boarding and raft building activities. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the activities and even the arrival of some rain around lunchtime did not dampen the spirits! In the evening the boys took a walk up to the woods near the campsite for a campfire, some singing and even cooking marshmallows over the fire.
Unfortunately by Wednesday the weather had definitely turned against us, as rain and cloud shrouded the Dorset coast. However, this did not dampen the spirits of the SHS campers as the boys returned to the woods where they took part in a number of different bush craft activities. They learnt how to make a fire and then how to produce bread. They also took part in archery and learnt to build their own shelters, which were certainly put to the test in the heavy rain. In the evening we enjoyed the Shrewsbury House School quiz led by our quiz-master Mr Mackay!
On Thursday, we returned to the beach to take part in coasteering which for many was the highlight of the week. It was especially pleasing to see the way in the boys encouraged and supported one another, especially those who were perhaps initially a little apprehensive of the activity. On Friday morning the boys had team building activities before we packed up our things and headed back to Shrewsbury House exhausted but having had a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable week together.
